SHERWOOD APPROVES LATEST ROUND OF BUSINESS GRANTS, URGES GOVERNOR TO REASSESS BUSINESS RESTRICTIONS

City Approves Nearly $164,000 in New Grants for 41 Businesses

As part of the continuing efforts by the City of Sherwood to help local businesses during the ongoing pandemic, the City has approved 41 business grants totaling nearly $164,000 in its latest round of financial support programs.  These grants focused on businesses that were hit particularly hard by the Governor’s two-week Freeze earlier this month, including restaurants, gyms, and indoor entertainment facilities.  Each of the 41 businesses will be receiving $4,000 and the City anticipates distributing checks before the beginning of the new year. Since March, the City of Sherwood has provided 128 grants totaling $612,000 to local Sherwood businesses to help them weather the economic hardships during the pandemic. These grants have been made possible through the City’s partnerships with Washington County and the State of Oregon, and by the Federal CARES Act.

This series of grant programs is in addition to other City efforts to assist businesses and residents, including a moratorium on commercial and residential evictions for our renters as well and a “Utility Assistance Program” for those in need. These programs were adopted in March and are still in effect and available to our community.

City Anticipates Future Funding Opportunities

City leadership continues to work directly with county, state and federal officials to seek additional financial support for local businesses.  With the news of a potential additional federal stimulus bill being signed this week, new resources may be on the horizon for Sherwood businesses.  The City anticipates continuing the partnership it has had with the Sherwood Chamber of Commerce since March to help educate, market and provide assistance to local businesses as they navigate and apply for the many support programs available to them.

City Urges Governor to Reassess Current Business Closures

City Leadership, including the Mayor and Council President,  have been and continue to urge the Governor’s office and the Oregon Health Authority to reassess restrictions on certain businesses, especially those that are currently required to be closed to the public. If these businesses can provide clear and detailed safety protocols, the City believes that the Governor should allow them to open on a limited or reduced scale.  “The one-size-fits-all approach by the State is causing a tremendous strain on many of our local businesses,” stated Mayor Keith Mays. “Using science and the available data, I believe that some of these businesses can safely operate on a limited basis, as opposed to the current blanket closures.”  Decisions on closures of certain businesses, such as indoor gyms, ice rinks, entertainment centers and restaurants, have been made by the State of Oregon through the Governor’s Office and Oregon Health Authority.  Feedback on these critical closure decisions should be sent directly to the Governor’s office at https://www.oregon.gov/gov/Pages/share-your-opinion.aspx  and the Oregon Health Authority at the email address of COVID.19@dhsoha.state.or.us. We urge you to lend your voice to this effort as we work in parallel to open our businesses with safe and responsible restrictions.
