The City of Sherwood and the YMCA Relationship

YMCA

The City of Sherwood and the YMCA have a unique relationship. The City of Sherwood owns the building but the YMCA is the Operator. This agreement dates back to 1996, when Sherwood residents passed a general obligation bond to construct a Recreation and Aquatic Facility. Shortly after the bond was passed, the City signed a 20-year Operating Agreement with the YMCA of Columbia-Willamette to operate the Facility. The YMCA opened its doors in September of 1998. In 2003, the sport court was enclosed and the Teen Center was built.

In January 2018, the Sherwood City Council authorized the City Manager to sign a new 5 year Operating Agreement with the YMCA, with an option to renew for an additional 5 years. In the new agreement, the City and the YMCA are dedicated to improving communication and building a stronger relationship. A couple of ways that this will occur is that the YMCA will now have a liaison to the Parks and Recreation Board that provides regular updates, the City Council will have a Council Liaison to the YMCA local Board of Managers and the Executive Director and the Community Services Director will meet on a regular basis to make sure that all lines of communication are open.

Over the next couple of years, the City and YMCA will be working together to evaluate the needs of the facility and to begin the conversation about a possible expansion.
