Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion--Our Social Justice Work

Sherwood Public Library

At Sherwood Public Library, we feel the urgency to act from our values and support our community.

As library staff, we want all community members and visitors to feel welcome, heard, safe, valued, supported, and to thrive. We do this work without entering into politics--instead from a point of compassion, empathy, and engagement to honor the diverse Sherwood community and to learn about other cultures and perspectives.

We take our role in this community seriously as selectors of what books are available to read, what activities are open to all, what ideas get amplified, and what voices are heard.

We believe this is the work of everyone, ever-evolving, and never done. We continue to stretch, grow, and set new goals.

We celebrate diversity and inclusion and are actively involved in rebuilding public libraries as equitable institutions. We embrace the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights—adopted in 1939 and supplemented with modern interpretations to evolve with the times. We also acknowledge the historical legacy of unequal access that public libraries have in the United States and are striving to make amends.

We are excited to be making progress, step-by-step, with specific goals set out in our Strategic Plan and in state and national library assessments. Below are ways we are working to operationalize equity and accessibility.

Need help in another language?  Interpretation is available in 20 languages through our county partnership with WCCLS. We have staff at the Library who can speak Spanish and French. Library card applications are available in Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Hindi, Japanese, Russian, and Somali, thanks to WCCLS. We can also request materials in other languages from other libraries.

Want to get involved or have a suggestion? Please contact Adrienne Doman Calkins, Library Manager, via email, call 503-625-4272, or stop by the Library.

We select books and materials to create windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors* to the world and to reflect our community’s own interests. We aim to even the playing field for our community members with access to resources, tools, and equipment.

In spring, 2022, we conducted our first full diversity audit of our printed books for all ages using the Ingram iCurate services. We  budgeted specific funds to fill identified gaps in our collection and added 300 new titles to the collection. We continued to use the reports to fill gaps in the 2022-2023 fiscal year.
