Project Description

We’re building a better, safer way for people biking and walking to cross OR 99W: a footbridge over the highway near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard.

Why is this needed?

  • North of the highway is the new high school and the Sherwood West expansion, which adds housing and commerce.
  • South of the highway is new housing near Brookman Road, the YMCA and a new skatepark.

It all adds up to more kids and adults crossing 99W to reach all those destinations.

We have several new trails ending near the intersection of 99W and SW Sunset Boulevard. Now we’ll connect them with a safe, convenient span over the highway.

Timeline: Construction begins in February 2024 and continues through summer 2025.

Groundbreaking Event

In a short ceremony, a few City officials will give speeches and “break ground” with golden shovels to commemorate the beginning of bridge construction.

Safety: eliminate or reduce vehicle/pedestrian conflicts and exposure
Desirability: minimize out of direction travel for pedestrians
Accessibility: provide crossing opportunities that provide for all pedestrians and bicyclists
Connectivity: integrate the crossing with the existing and planned trail network to connect Sherwood across Hwy 99W
Beauty: create an opportunity to welcome individuals to Sherwood through design or lighting features
Efficiency: provide high benefits for the City of Sherwood at a cost commensurate with similar facilities.
