The Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center is a place to have a delicious meal, exercise, learn, play, and find support.  Marjorie Stewart Center staff are available by phone so please call us at (503) 625-5644 if you have questions, want to join in for the fun, or just want to check in.

Meals

We offer fresh cooked lunch as well as a fresh salad bar and scratch-made soups from 12pm to 1pm, Monday through Friday, by reservation.

Let’s Talk Downsizing

The Cedar Creek Trail, part of the greater Ice Age Tonquin Regional Trail System, runs right behind the Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center. Have you been on the trail a thousand times? Join us for the joy and camaraderie of a good stroll through the woods. Have you not had the chance to check out our trail but are looking for a perfect opportunity? Here it is! We’ll meet in the lounge at the senior center and head out at 10am – back in time for lunch!

Circle of Friends

Circle of Friends is geared towards older adults (aged 60+) in need of more social support and connection to their community. Strong for Life   – Mondays and Thursdays at 10am (Zoom & In-Person)

Energize your body and mind with our twice-weekly Strong for Life exercise classes. Strong for Life was developed by Providence physical therapists as an easy-to-follow routine designed to improve balance, strength and flexibility. The routine can adjust to your needs by choosing one of four levels – all movements can be done in standing or sitting positions. 

Gentle Slow Flow Yoga – Tuesdays at 11am

Learn, grow and find steadiness and strength through gentle yoga. Practice poses modified to fit every body. Be part of this playful supportive group as we explore the yoga mat, the chair and our feet. Bring your mat and a small blanket.

Line Dancing – 1st & 3rd Thursdays at 1:30pm

Talk about making a workout fun! Shuffle, kick, and grapevine your way through this high energy class. In this class you’ll learn basic line dance moves and routines that we’ll build upon each class. Have fun, move your body, and learn a new dance!

Cardio Drumming – Thursdays at 2pm

Are you looking for a new way to get a workout? Is your exercise routine getting boring? Are you plain just not excited to work out? Boy, have we got a class for you! Join this upbeat and irreverent class as we beat rhythms on yoga balls along to music. It’s a bit silly and a great workout! Seated or standing options

Chair Aerobics – Wednesdays at 11 am

Keep your body moving in this chair-based aerobics class! We move from our head to our toes in this engaging exercise class. (Free)

Chair Yoga – Fridays at 10:45am

Join us for this gentle and safe yoga practice in a chair.  You will move though physical postures, breathing practices, and short meditations to harness the relaxation and emotional benefits of yoga. This yoga practice will support and build balance, strength, mobility and executive functions of the brain. Beginners and all fitness levels welcome.

Mystery Monday – First Monday of the Month at 4pm (In-person & Zoom)

Indulge your inner sleuth by joining our monthly mystery book club! Each month we’ll go on a crime solving adventure with authors from near and far, covering a range of mystery interests.

Celebrate your creativity with others. Practice and hone your skills with this supportive group of artists. This group is participant driven so bring your materials and tools to work on whatever project you feel like – watercolor, pastels, pencils, oils, acrylic, mixed media. (Free)

Join this creative and talented group to learn, grow, or just have fun with a craft. If you’re an experienced woodcarver, bring your tools and project. If you are new to the art, please come to a meeting and learn what tools you might need and see what woodcarving is all about! (Free)

Write Your Life Story – Wednesdays at 9:30 am (In-person)

Have you been wanting some support and direction as you recollect and commit your memories to paper?  This is the group for you! Each week the members of the group write a story from their life and then share them with the group. If you’re looking for an environment free of criticism to read your story, come and learn from each other’s past. Always welcoming new members.

Have a cellphone that is acting up, laptop or tablet that just won’t behave, or any other number of technology issues? Let our volunteer tech guys help! Medicare Counseling (SHIBA) – 3rd Wednesdays from 12pm to 2pm, by appointment

On the 3rd Wednesday of each month, 12pm to 2pm, in-person Washington County Senior Health Insurance Benefits counselors are at the Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center to help those on or new to Medicare make informed choices about benefit plan options. Counselors are highly trained and certified volunteers who will work with you to review plan options, including Advantage Plans, Medigap supplemental insurance policies, and prescription drug plans. They can also assist in understanding a bill or fee charges, help file a grievance or appeal for a change, explain timelines, and ensure you are receiving all possible benefits you may be eligible for. Check in with our visiting nurse to keep an eye on your blood pressure.

Veteran Benefits Assistance – 3rd Fridays at 11:00 am

Have questions about veteran benefits available to you or your family members? Are you having a hard time navigating the federal VA system? We can help! Drop by for free one-on-one assistance from a knowledgeable and friendly Veterans Service Officer! This service is available at the Marjorie Stewart Senior Center Community Center the 3rd Friday of each month to help answer your questions about Veteran benefits. First come, first served drop-ins. Please check in at the front desk.

AARP Tax Service – February 1st through April 15th

Introducing the Senior Shuttle!

We are excited to announce the newest program from the Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center – the Sherwood Senior Shuttle! This service of the center is designed to help make sure that older adults of Sherwood can go where they want – have fun and get things done! We are starting off slow with service on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 9:30am to 4:00pm.

The Pearl Room Free Mental Health Support

Many of us have moments when we’re not feeling comfortable with how we’re experiencing life and the world around us. The Pearl Room at the Marjorie Stewart Senior Center provides free mental health support and depression treatment to older adults through in-person, in-center, and TeleHealth interactions.  We accomplish this through empowering PsyD students and peer coaches who are overseen by a licensed councilor, creating a program that can be beneficial for all participants. The Pearl Room also provides a comfortable and engaging environment for support groups and important conversations that are both peer and student facilitated.

The Program to Engage Active, Rewarding Lives (PEARLS)

Have you been feeling down or blue? Have you lost interest in doing things? If you answered “yes” to one or both of these questions and are 65 years or older, there may be something we can do to help. Call 503-625-5644 to register.

  • The PEARLS Program teaches you skills to manage the unpleasant feelings associated with depression.
  • Local coaches meet with you individually to help you identify and solve problems that are linked to feeling the way you do.
  • Learn ways to become more physically & socially active.

Circle of Friends

One-on-One Counseling – By Appointment

Life can be overwhelming at times and sometimes we just need someone to talk to. We are happy to partner with Pacific University to offer one-on-one therapeutic counseling to the older adults in our community. Call 503-625-5644 to make an appointment. 

Supported Aging – Thursdays at 2:30pm

This is a drop-in conversation group to discuss any of the many troubles we face as we age. Being older gives us many unique perspectives of experience and with it, some universal problems. Join the group to share challenges and find support with others as well as tools from our head counselor, Joan Laguzza, LCSW specialized in working with older adults. We will work together to identify solutions and offer a supportive space for listening and problem solving.

Grief Support – Fridays at 11am                                              

There is no normal way to grieve, it strikes us in different yet similar ways. Join this peer-facilitated group to find support from others who are experiencing the loss of someone they love. This safe and welcoming environment provides the space for you to share your feelings, experiences, and memories while navigating your loss.

Volunteer At The Senior Center

Make a difference in your community at the Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center! When you donate your time, talents and skills, you support and enhance the Senior Center’s programs, services and mission. You also give the Senior Center the ability to stretch tax dollars and improve the lives of our citizens. Read through the list below to see some of the specific help we need!

Front Desk:

This volunteer is on the front line of our center, greeting visitors, answering questions, and checking people in to center programs. They answer the phone, take messages, and transfer calls to staff members. This position will also take meal reservations, register people for activities, and make confirmation calls. Process payments for meals and activities. Generally, this person assists Center Manager and front desk staff with day-to-day projects.

Shifts are 9am to 1pm and 1pm to 4pm, Monday through Friday.

Lunch Greeter:

This volunteer is the first point of contact for people coming in for lunch. This person checks people in for lunch, hands out reservation numbers, and helps set up program participants for their visit.

Shifts are 11:30am to 1pm, Monday through Friday.

Server:

This position is so much fun! Spend some time during lunch chatting with our lunchers while pouring coffee, water, and tea. Help carry soup and salad plates to people’s tables as well as bringing hot meals to each attendee. Work in pairs to whip-down tables and chairs after lunch.

Shifts run 11:30am through 1:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Kitchen Lead:

Help assist our Chef Dominic in preparing daily meals. Includes washing, chopping, and preparing vegetables, assistance with salad preparation, meal assembly, plating and packing to-go meals; cleaning of surfaces, cookware, and utensils. Food handler’s card required (can be acquired after volunteer application). No experience necessary but helpful, comfort using a kitchen knife is also helpful.

Shifts run from 9:30am to 1:30pm

Kitchen Assistant:

Help Chef Dominic and the kitchen lead volunteer in preparing daily meals. Help to ensure kitchen cleanliness by washing dishes using the industrial dishwasher (which is actually pretty fun – it washes dishes in 90 seconds!) and wiping down surfaces with diluted bleach solution. Salad prep and assembly. Meal assembly, plating, and packing; helping stir this and that. Food handler’s card is required (can be acquired after volunteer application). No experience necessary.

Shifts run from 10am to 2pm.

Meal Delivery Driver:

Deliver freshly prepared, hot meals to Sherwood area seniors. Using your own vehicle, provide nutrition and a friendly check-in with area older adults. Meals are picked up at the Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center. Drivers should be able to lift 25 lbs. and have a vehicle that can transport 2-3 large coolers. It is important for delivery drivers to feel comfortable delivering meals to all of the Sherwood area, including driving rural routes.

Shifts run 12:15pm through 1:45pm, Monday through Friday.

Sherwood Senior Shuttle Drivers:

Our volunteer drivers take the show on the road as they pick up riders and drop them off where they need to go. This position is integral to helping keep our Sherwood older adult community connected while remaining independent. We take people to doctor’s appointments, drop them off to go grocery shopping, drive them to the vet with their pets, take them to friend’s houses, the YMCA, to the senior center, and more! Meet some wonderful people while taking them place to place. The shuttle is a Ford van that does not require a special license. Shuttle training is provided and required.

Shifts run 9am to 12:30pm and 12:30pm to 4pm, Monday through Thursday.

Program Assistant:

Help with individual programs or with all programs. Assist with set up, take down, and clean-up. Either lead program or assist the program leader, maintain program attendance records. Be a liaison between program and front desk to make sure needs for the program are taken care of.

Shift is 15min before and after program.

Check & Chat Volunteer:

Call community members to check on their needs and chat with them.

As needed.

Special Projects Volunteer:

Help with individual tasks that are needed by the senior center. This requires help that isn’t able to be covered by Front Desk or Program Volunteer due to the time and dedication to specific project. Past examples have been helping to reshelve the library, cleaning out planter boxes, organizing yarn donations, putting together Easter baskets, wrapping Christmas presents, making tax appointment calls, etc.

Rentals At The Senior Center

When the Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center isn’t senior centering, it is a great resource for renting – from large scale banquets to small meetings. The rooms at the Center are versatile and can accommodate a wide variety of table/seating layouts for different types of events. The 2,606 sq ft dining room can accommodate larger gatherings of up to 135, to our smallest rental space that can accommodate up to 12 for smaller meetings and gatherings, with our large classroom in-between that can accommodate up to 30 people. We also have a full commercial kitchen that can be rented for small business or cottage industry use or be used for catering purposes with dining room events.

The dining room at the Marjorie Stewart Senior Community regularly seats 100 for daily meals but can be configured in many different ways to host seated & served events, theater-style, or mixed use as needed. The space has been home to weddings, baby showers, celebrations of life, fundraising banquets, town halls, church services, performances, Girl & Boy Scout meetings & events, and even sword practice! Can be combined with full or catering kitchen rentals.

Size: 2,606 sq. ft.

Capacity: ~135, depending on layout

Minimum: Two-hour minimum rental, including set up, tear down, and clean up.

Includes: 15 5” round tables, 14 6’ x 30” (72” x 30”), & 90 diner chairs (135 diner chairs can be loaded into the room upon request).

The large classroom at the Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center is regularly used for exercise, classes, bridge games, and workshops. In its life as a rental space, it is often used for meetings, small parties & gatherings, and homeschool playdates.

Size: 798 sq. ft.

Capacity: Up to 30, depending on configuration.

Minimum: One-hour minimum rental, including set up, tear down, and clean-up.

Includes: 8 6’ x 30” (72” x 30”) tables, 25 diner chairs, four folding card tables, sink. More chairs can be loaded in the room if requested.

The lounge at the Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center is a multi-use space that houses our non-fiction come and go library as well as our Mystery Monday book group, pinochle, Circle of Friends, D&D, and coffee groups. It is the smallest of our rooms available for rent and has been used for homeschooling lessons, play groups, small craft workshops, and meetings.

Size: 507 sq. ft.

Capacity: Up to 16, depending on configuration.

Minimum: One-hour minimum rental, including set up, tear down, and clean-up.

Includes: 4 3’ x 3’ (36”x36”) wooden card tables, 1 45” round table, and 12 chairs (more chairs can be loaded in the room if requested).

When hosting an event in the Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center, it can be helpful to have a place to store cold foods and keep food at a safe temperature – not to mention a place to do dishes!

Must be rented in concert with a dining room rental.

Minimum: Two-hour minimum rental, including set up, tear down, and clean-up.

Event insurance required.

Includes: Reach-in refrigerator space, use of the cold and hot wells, commercial dishwasher, and ice machine (and ice).

Our commercial kitchen regularly prepares, cooks, and cleans up after a meal service of 60-100 people during senior center meals. If you are looking to cook a meal from scratch (or near scratch) for your event, you have a small cottage business that needs a commercial kitchen to prepare food, or you have way more cucumber than you can pickle in your home kitchen – the commercial kitchen at the Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center just might make your life a little easier.

Can be rented in concert with dining room or independently.

Event insurance required.

Minimum: Two-hour minimum rental, including set up, tear down, and clean-up.

Includes: Commercial gas stovetop, flattop, two ovens, refrigerator space, use of hot and cold wells, commercial dishwasher, ice machine, and microwave.
