One Book, One Coast — Community Reads
Wednesday, April 1, 2026
Join us for a new community reads event this spring. We’re excited to take part in the first year of One Book, One Coast, the largest library book club on the West Coast!
Over 100 libraries throughout Oregon, Washington, and California will gather from April 1 to May 31 to read a shared book together. The program unites libraries and readers by celebrating literacy, learning, community, and civic discourse.
This year’s pick is They Called Us Enemy by George Takei. This bestselling graphic memoir recounts Takei’s experiences in incarceration camps during his childhood.
Pick up a *free copy of They Called Us Enemy at the library, while supplies last. Prefer to read digitally? Find an always-available copy on Libby.
We will be hosting virtual and in-person book groups to discuss They Called Us Enemy:
- Thursday, May 21st @ 6pm, Virtual. Please register to receive the Zoom link.
- Wednesday, May 27th @ 6pm, In-person. Registration is encouraged but not required.
George Takei will speak about the book on Sunday, May 31st from 2-4pm at the East Los Angeles Library. Join us at the library to watch the livestream, or register to watch online.
*Giveaway copies were generously donated by the Friends of the Sherwood Library.
