Mobile Speed Safety Cameras Coming Soon to Sherwood
May 15, 2026Coming Soon! Mobile speed safety cameras have been placed on Oregon Street and will go live in the next couple of weeks. The City of Sherwood and the Police Department want to share what they are, why they’re here, and how the program will work so there are no surprises when they activate.
What they are: Two mobile speed safety cameras. Each unit is clearly visible and will be paired with advance warning signage at every location. This is an augmentation of our current red light and speed enforcement program, using the same technology we have had in place since 2010.
Why we’re doing this: Speeding and distracted driving are the two most common complaints we receive from Sherwood residents. With often only two officers on patrol at a time, our department can’t maintain a constant traffic presence everywhere it’s needed. These cameras extend our reach into the areas where residents have told us speed is a problem.
The cameras are mobile after the initial deployment on Oregon Street (minimum 30 days), the cameras can be rotated to other areas of Sherwood as concerns are identified through resident complaints, crash data, and observed traffic patterns.
A one-time grace period: When the program activates, a 30-day grace period begins. During those 30 days, warnings will be issued, no citations, no fees. This grace period applies to the program as a whole. It does not restart when the cameras are moved to a new location. After the initial 30 days, citations will be issued anywhere the cameras are deployed.
Violator-funded: This program is funded by violators, not by taxpayers. The community controls the outcome. The less speeding occurs, the less revenue the program generates. Zero violations would mean zero revenue and we’d consider that a success.
Full program details, including the activation date, citation process, and FAQ, will be released before the cameras go live.
