The Woman in White by Wilke Collins

Engaged as a drawing master, Walter Hartright becomes embroiled in the sinister intrigues of Sir Percival Glyde and his friend Count Fosco, who has a taste for white mice, vanilla bonbons, and poison. Secrets, mistaken identities, surprise revelations, amnesia, locked rooms and locked asylums, and an unorthodox villain made this mystery thriller an instant success when it first appeared in 1860. (Penguin Putnam)
