Permanent Signs

Permanent signs are intended to remain for the long term.  Most permanent signs require a building permit because they are attached to a structure (building/wall) or are free-standing requiring engineered plans. However, there are permanent wall signs that do not require a building permit such as window/wall vinyl coverings.  When a building permit is needed the Building Department facilitates the permit and only the Building Permit Application form is used.  If the sign does not require a building permit, a sign permit is still required, please see the application below.

Permanent Signs are regulated by zone and can be Free-Standing, Walls Signs or Projecting Signs.  New signs and existing signs that are relocated or structurally altered require review by the Planning Department.

If you are unsure if a building permit is required, contact the Building Department  at (503) 625-4215.  For more information contact the Planning Department  at (503) 925-2308 or review Section 16.100 in the Municipal Code.
