SUMMARY:Adult Book Discussion: The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods
DESCRIPTION:Read. Be inspired. Discuss. \nWe’re hosting a book discussion in person at the library. If you love to talk about the books you’ve read\, join us for a lively discussion of The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods\, which will be available as an e-book and audiobook in Libby as well as physical library copies which can be checked out. The first 10 people to register for this program can be given copies of the book provided generously by Friends of Sherwood Public Library. \nRegistration online is encouraged but not required. Click here to register. \nFrom the publisher: \nOn a quiet street in Dublin\, a lost bookshop is waiting to be found. For too long\, Opaline\, Martha and Henry have been the side characters in their own lives. But when a vanishing bookshop casts its spell\, these three unsuspecting strangers will discover that their own stories are every bit as extraordinary as the ones found in the pages of their beloved books. And by unlocking the secrets of the shelves\, they find themselves transported to a world of wonder where nothing is as it seems.

F. Jackaby\, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary-including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details\, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby’s assistant. On her first day\, Abigail finds herself in the midst of a thrilling case: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are convinced it’s an ordinary villain\, but Jackaby is certain the foul deeds are the work of the kind of creature whose very existence the local police seem adamant to deny.” \nNov 13th\, 2024: War Girls\, by Tochi Onyebuchi\n“The year is 2172. Climate change and nuclear disasters have rendered much of earth unlivable. Only the lucky ones have escaped to space colonies in the sky. In a war-torn Nigeria\, battles are fought using flying\, deadly mechs and soldiers are outfitted with bionic limbs and artificial organs meant to protect them from the harsh\, radiation-heavy climate. Across the nation\, as the years-long civil war wages on\, survival becomes the only way of life. Two sisters\, Onyii and Ify\, dream of more. Their lives have been marked by violence and political unrest. Still\, they dream of peace\, of hope\, of a future together. And they’re willing to fight an entire war to get there.” \nDec 11th\, 2024: I Hunt Killers\, by Barry Lyga\n“Seventeen-year-old Jazz learned all about being a serial killer from his notorious “Dear Old Dad\,” but believes he has a conscience that will help fight his own urges and right some of his father’s wrongs\, so he secretly helps the police apprehend the town’s newest murderer\, ‘The Impressionist.'” \nJan 8th\, 2025: Dispatches From Parts Unknown\, by Bryan Bliss \n“Julie knows it’s unusual that a professional wrestler runs a constant commentary on her life that only she can hear. But grief can be awfully funny sometimes. National Book Award nominee Bryan Bliss delivers a thought-provoking\, one-of-a-kind novel about how to tread the line between moving on and holding on.” \nFeb 12th\, 2025: Dread Nation\, by Justina Ireland\n“When families go missing in Baltimore County\, Jane McKeene\, who is studying to become an Attendant\, finds herself in the middle of a conspiracy that has her fighting for her life against powerful enemies.\nJane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg\, Pennsylvania– derailing the War Between the States and changing the nation forever. Now laws like the Native and Negro Education Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead. Jane is studying to become an Attendant\, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do. But it’s not a life Jane wants. When families around Baltimore County begin to go missing\, Jane is caught in the middle of a conspiracy… and the restless dead are the least of her problems.” \nMar 12th\, 2025: Everything We Never Had\, by Randy Ribay\n“…an emotionally charged\, moving novel about four generations of Filipino American boys grappling with identity\, masculinity\, and their fraught father-son relationships. Told in multiple perspectives\, Everything We Never Had unfolds like a beautifully crafted nesting doll\, where each Maghabol boy forges his own path amid heavy family and societal expectations\, passing down his flaws\, values\, and virtues to the next generation\, until it’s up to Enzo to see how he can braid all these strands and men together.” \nApr 9th\, 2025: Night Owls\, by A.R. Vishny\n“In this thrilling paranormal YA romance debut steeped in folklore\, two estries—owl-shifting female vampires from Jewish tradition—face New York’s monstrous underworld to save the girl one of them loves with help from the boy one of them fears before they are\, all of them\, lost forever.” \nMay 14th\, 2025: Kindling\, by Traci Chee\n“After the war is over\, seven outlawed kindlings–elite\, magic-wielding warriors whose devastating power comes at the cost of their own young lives–must confront their pasts\, their trauma and their grim fates to reclaim who they once were and fight one last time.”

SUMMARY:Parenting in a Noisy Time (Virtual Program)
DESCRIPTION:How do we parent and why? Who and what do we allow to affect our parenting? Parents are under many pressures\, from social media\, peer judgement\, and the changing world around us. We can learn to see the distinct individuality in each of our kids and make better choices for them when we are mindful navigating these pressures with our own internal compass. Participants in this conversation will gain new lenses for parental reflection. \nThis event will be presented virtually. Zoom link forthcoming.  \nFacilitator Bio: Ariadne Grace (née Gina Angelique) is a choreographer\, reparation gardener\, and mother of two incredible children. She is focused on place- and people-based movement she calls “Planet Dance” that connects the human body garden to the earth’s expression of body we call nature. Her work is steeped in rural community\, where she has been homesteading for fifteen years\, and is informed by regenerative and sustainable garden and farm practices and the intersection of art and agriculture. She investigates rural themes of generational isolation and poverty\, women’s issues—domestic abuse\, survivorhood\, single motherhood—and the role of women in forging a path from extractive cultures to reparation and restoration. She is currently writing a book on parenting in reflection of thirteen years of homeschooling her children. Grace is Resident Artist for The Motherline: themotherline.org.
