Joint Press Release: YMCA of Columbia Willamette and the City of Sherwood

CITY AND YMCA ANNOUNCE PLAN TO SELL SHERWOOD YMCA FACILITY TO YMCA ORGANIZATION, TOWN HALLS ANNOUNCED FOR MARCH 2nd, AND MARCH 9th

The City of Sherwood and the YMCA of Columbia Willamette have announced they have completed negotiations for the City to sell the Sherwood Regional YMCA facility located at 23000 SW Pacific Hwy in Sherwood to the YMCA. Prior to formal approval, both the City of Sherwood and the YMCA of Columbia Willamette want to receive feedback and answer questions from community stakeholders.

Two (2) Town Hall Meetings are scheduled for Thursday, March 2nd at 6:00 p.m. at the Sherwood Regional YMCA and for Thursday, March 9th at 6:00 p.m. at the City of Sherwood’s City Hall for the public to learn more about the purchase and the opportunity to ask questions of both YMCA staff and City officials.

The YMCA has operated the facility since it began serving the community in 1996. As part of the purchase agreement, the City of Sherwood will retain ownership of the Skate Park and the undeveloped northern portion of the parcel. The parties have discussed future programming opportunities in both areas.

“We are so excited about this opportunity and incredibly grateful to the City of Sherwood staff and council for working with us to make this happen,” stated YMCA President & CEO Tyler S. Wright. “This purchase will give the Y the opportunity to create new and exciting programs and to look at future facility improvements and potential expansions as we continue serving the families and residents of Sherwood.”

“We are excited about the investment the YMCA is making in the City of Sherwood and their vision of how they can continue to enhance and improve their services to our community,” stated Sherwood City Manager Keith Campbell. “We look forward to working with our community members to best determine how we can reinvest the proceeds of this sale into our future park and trail enhancements.”

After the Town Hall meetings to receive and solicit community feedback, the next steps are the formal consideration by the Sherwood City Council and the YMCA Board of Directors for approval to sign the purchase agreement. If approved, the final transaction would be subject to the completion of certain related agreements and customary conditions, with a closing expected in Fall 2023.
