Before You Dig

Planning on digging anytime soon?  Call 811 for underground utility locations.

Perhaps you will be putting in a new flower border, planting a tree, or placing fence posts.

If so, all residents, contractors or anyone planning to dig are asked to call 811 or 1-800-553-4344 or 503-246-6699 at least 48 hours before digging. This toll-free number is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

When you call, member companies, such as the local water department and electric company, will be notified. Member companies will come to your site and mark their lines indicating the position of the line using spray paint so you may dig safely without hitting any utility lines. The different colored paints indicate the different utility lines.

However, when you DON'T call, you may:

  • Experience a serious or life-threatening injury
  • Be responsible for repair costs to utility lines and/or experience other legal problems
  • Interrupt services such as electricity, cable TV, gas, water, telephone, etc. to you and/or your neighborhood; and/or cause your job/project to be delayed.

Please have the following information available before you call:

  • Name and telephone number
  • Alternate name and telephone number
  • Whether work will be taking place within 10 feet of overhead power lines
  • Type of work to be done
  • Who the work is being done for
  • City, County, State
  • Location of work or street address
  • Nearest intersecting street
  • Distance and direction from intersecting street
  • Extent of work to be done
  • Special instructions for marking; and Township, range and section (if known)

This is in accordance with Oregon Law Stat. Auth. Sections 1 to 5 and 7, Chapter 691, Oregon Laws 1995.
