What do I do/not do when I get stopped by the police?
When you are stopped by a police officer please pull over to the right side of the road. DO NOT get out of your vehicle unless the officer tells you to. You are required by law to provide your driver's license, proof of insurance and vehicle registration.
Why did the officer wait to pull me over instead of right away?
An officer may wait to initiate a vehicle stop farther down the road for safety reasons. Some areas may only have one lane or in a bad intersection
Why couldn't I see the radar/lidar speed measuring device?
Officers are not required to show the display on their radar or lidar units. Another reason is for officer safety. Some officers carry other weapons near the front of the cabin. Having a person with close proximity to those weapons presents a danger to the officer.
An officer/deputy/trooper from a different agency stopped me in Sherwood. Can they do this?
Yes. Police Officers, Deputy Sheriffs and State Troopers are certified by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. Therefore they are granted law enforcement powers anywhere in the State of Oregon.
Who is required to wear a bike helmet?
Anyone under the age of 16 operating a bicycle on a roadway or place open to the public.
