Building Permit Application
All Building Permit Forms

A permit is required to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, convert, or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system. However, there are some exceptions to the permit requirements. To download a permit application, click on a link on the right. If you are not sure whether you need a permit, call the City of Sherwood Building Department at (503) 625-4226 or (503) 625-4215

Building Permits are for structural alterations. They are required to add a room or create additional living space, add a window or door, add or remove walls, and build a stairway or carport. Depending on the extent of the work, a permit may be required to build a deck, porch cover, shed, retaining wall, or when re-roofing. Some of these permits may also require a review from the Planning Department.

Use a Building Permit Application form for Fire Sprinklers or Signs (See Permanent Signs)

Permanent signs are intended to remain for the long term.  Most permanent signs require a building permit because they are attached to a structure (building/wall) or are free-standing requiring engineered plans.

Plumbing Permits are required to replace water heaters and underground piping, add alter or relocate piping inside a wall or ceiling, or beneath a floor, and for plumbing in all new installations. This includes installation of sewers, water service, and exterior rain drains and the emergency repair, alteration or replacement of freeze-damaged or leaking concealed piping, if new piping exceeds three feet. A plumbing permit is required to install a backflow preventer for a lawn irrigation system.

Mechanical Permits may be required for work on heating, cooling, or ventilation systems, including bath vents and wood stoves. The installation, alteration, or repair of gas piping between the meter and an appliance or other equipment, including all liquefied petroleum gas piping, is also considered mechanical work.

There is no longer a credit card authorization form available.  After we have received your application we will call to get your credit card information.

Electrical Permits are required to install or alter any permanent wiring or electrical device, run additional wiring, put in an electrical outlet or light fixture, install a receptacle for a garage door opener, convert from fuse box to circuit breakers, or install or alter low-voltage systems such as security alarms, stereo or computer systems. *Electrical or low voltage permits need to be obtained from Washington County.
